Tyler Lathe, a senior at St. Croix Central High School, died Wednesday morning.
Medical personnel were called to his home at 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9. School officials said the death wasn't flu related.
Lathe was a well-known student at St. Croix Central as a top player on the Panther football, basketball and baseball teams.
"He had great work ethic, an awesome personality and was a great student to have in school. He will be greatly missed by many," said St. Croix Central principal Glenn Webb.
Webb said the school is following its crisis plan. He said the focus is to provide support for the SCC student body. Counselors, clergy members and medical professionals are on site to support the students and staff.
"There are many rumors circulating about the events leading up to Tyler's death and we are having ongoing follow-up with students to ensure all are safe and supported," Webb said.
