St. Croix Central honors veterans at ceremony

The St. Croix Central School District celebrated Veterans Day with various programs on Friday, Nov. 11.

Elementary school

Elementary school students honored local veterans at a morning program in the gym, which was decorated in patriotic artwork and poems. Around a dozen veterans attended the program. Each veteran shared information about their military background and their connection to St. Croix Central. Veterans ranged from parents or grandparents of students to neighbors and friends. The program included patriotic songs, Veterans Day history read by students and introductions of each veteran.

Middle school

The middle school multipurpose room was packed Friday afternoon for the Veterans Day program. Around 58 veterans and their family members attended the program.

Sgt. Mike Gunderson was the keynote speaker at the ceremony. Gunderson, who is set to be deployed again soon, showed pictures and shared his military experiences with attendees. Gunderson reminded everyone to thank a veteran's family members as well, as they, too, make sacrifices when their loved ones are deployed.

Eighth grade band members performed "Armed Forces on Parade," by Andrew Balent, and asked veterans to stand up when their branch of military was represented in the piece.

Fifth through eighth grade choir students performed "Hallelujah," arranged by Roger Emerson, which was adapted by middle school choir students with verses they created in honor of Veterans Day. Students also shared Veterans Day history and sang patriotic songs at the ceremony. Following the program, students shook the hand of each veteran.

High school

In honor of Veterans Day, John Newton from the American Legion, Deneen-McCabe Post #432 presented St. Croix Central High School with five American flags. These flags will be placed in high school classrooms, as the high school recites the Pledge of Allegiance after the morning announcements each day.

The American Legion and St. Croix Central would like to have an American flag in every high school classroom. If you would like to make a financial donation to the American Legion or St. Croix Central to help accomplish this goal, contact John Newton at 715-220-9552 or Bill Stuessel at 715-796-5383, ext. 122.
