The championship teams were a foregone conclusion before the start of last Thursday's Dunn-St. Croix Conference Cross Country Meet in Mondovi last Thursday.

With Spring Valley's girls and Colfax's boys being two of the premier teams in western Wisconsin, the victors were pretty much predetermined. That meant the battles in the meet would be for second place and individual honors. For the St. Croix Central teams, those alternatives didn't go quite as the Panthers had hoped. Central's boys placed fourth and the Panther girls were sixth among the eight teams in the 2012 D-SC meet.

The Panthers were able to get one all-conference runner. Senior Brett Briggs placed 14th in the boys race to earn second team D-SC honors. Central coach Bill Emery said that was the lone highlight for his team in the meet.

Emery said he was hoping to get more all-conference runners and better team finishes in the meet. The Panther boys finished 12 points out of second place.

"A couple teams (Elk Mound and Boyceville) snuck underneath us. I didn't expect that to happen," Emery said.

Emery said the runners on both Panther teams were unhappy with their times at Mondovi. He said the team has one more chance to achieve its goals. That comes this Friday when Central runs in the Division 2 sectional meet at Barron. The boys race will begin at 4 p.m. at Barron High School, with the girls race starting at 4:45 p.m.

Emery said the Panthers have a tradition of running well at Barron and it is a course that is known to produce low times. He said he hopes that combination will help the Panthers achieve some of the goals that have been eluding the team.
