St. Croix Central volleyball losses to top D-SC opponents

Two of the Dunn-St. Croix Conference volleyball co-leaders were on the schedule for the St. Croix Central volleyball team.

For a team trying to play through growing pains, it was a difficult week for the Panthers. They were defeated at Spring Valley last Tuesday 25-10, 25-16, 25-22. That was followed by a homecourt loss to Boyceville last Thursday, 25-15, 25-18, 25-16.

Against Spring Valley, the Panthers started slowly but improved with each game.

“But it was too late to change the momentum,” said Central co-coach Julia Foley. “Our team has such great potential, but it is struggling with chemistry on the court. When we find the chemistry, we will be a tough team.”

In each match there seems to be a new area that causes the Panthers problems. Against Spring Valley, the Panthers struggled with placing their hit attempts inbounds. Passing issues are the one constant in the Panthers’ growing pains. Handling Boyceville’s powerful serves was a big problem in Thursday’s loss.

The Panthers are running out of time to get their season on-track. The Panthers conclude their home season this Thursday with a match against Elk Mound. The regular season finale for the Panthers arrives next Tuesday when they play at Elmwood. Elmwood’s only Dunn-St. Croix Conference win is against Glenwood City, which is also the Panthers’ only victim in D-SC action this season.

A week later, the Panthers will play in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament. The Panthers are in a bracket that includes Baldwin-Woodville, Ellsworth, New Richmond, Osceola, Prescott and Somerset.
