St. Croix National plans to add snowtubing in 2009-10
Somerset will soon be the place for tubing all year round.
In addition to the water tubing on the Apple River during the summer months, snow tubing will be available during the winter months, courtesy of St. Croix National Golf.
"We have all our governmental approval," Doug Hoskin, co-owner of St. Croix National, said. "But when we started looking at this, we realized it'd be late January before we could start and then our season would only be two months long."
Hoskin began seeking approval earlier this season to construct a 1,000-foot run on the property. Although the plans call for a snow-making machine, Hoskin said the lateness of the year and berevity of snow made them decide to wait until next winter to open operations.
The expected cost is $450,000, which includes the snow-making machine, lights for the track, tube rental, etc. The property already has a clubhouse complete with full menu and liquor license. They plan to have the snowtubing season run from Nov. 15, 2009-March 15, 2010.
Other possible winter activities include hosting cross-country skiing and an outdoor skating rink.
As for the immediate future, they are planning on having fish frys during the winter months after Jan. 1, 2009.
"We have a fantastic tubing hill and a beautiful clubhouse," Hoskin said. "Once we get going on tubing, a whole array of options open."
