Last Wednesday evening’s meeting of the Star Prairie Village Board began on a somber note as President Greg Gibson remembered long-time trustee Bruce Johnson, husband of Village Clerk Patsy Johnson.

Bruce Johnson passed away on July 18 after a long battle with cancer.

“Bruce was not only a good trustee for a lot of years, he was one of my good friends. Patsy, just want you to know, we appreciate all the years he gave to us. He will be missed,” said Gibson.

County Road M bridge project

Stevens Engineers’ Angela Popenhagen presented the board with the first change order and a request for payment for $4,905 in conjunction with the County Road M improvement project. Construction related to the bridge necessitated that the fire hydrant at the corner of County Road M and First Street be moved ahead of schedule. Pember Companies, responsible for the road construction portion of the project not scheduled to begin until later this month, removed the existing hydrant and replaced it with a new hydrant in the designated location. The cost of the separate operation to remove the old hydrant ahead of schedule and to replace it with a new hydrant totaled $4,905.

Due to logistical considerations, Popenhagen also revised the substantial and final completion dates for the project to be Sept. 30 and Oct. 15 respectively. The board approved both the change order and request for payment unanimously.

City Maintenance Operator Brody Larson informed the board he would contact Xcel Energy with regard to fixing the antenna they hit while working in proximity to Lift Station No. 1. He also contacted members of Star Prairie Fish & Game about removing two box elder trees constricting the Apple River in the path of the rubber duck race scheduled to take place during Ox Cart Days. Larson also asked the board consider allocating funds to perform repair work to the outfield fence at the ballpark this winter.
