State says Ho Chunk lawsuit is attempt to delay payment
The state of Wisconsin says a lawsuit filed by the Ho Chunk Nation is just an attempt to delay collection of $72 million.
The state says the Ho Chunk owes that money for the casinos it operates.
The tribe says it isn't obligated to pay.
The suit filed in Dane County Circuit Court concerns the question of whether Gov. Doyle had the right to sign a contract with the tribe that would never end.
The Ho Chunk says a 2004 court ruling disallowing a perpetual contract with another tribe should cancel its contract as well.
A federal lawsuit about the contract with no ending date is pending right now.
