Storms light up evening, bring damaging winds
Storms rolled through the area Tuesday night, bringing damaging winds. A tornado watch was issued in late afternoon, continuing until mid-evening.
The tornado watch was issued because weather conditions were conducive for spawning tornadoes. Heat during the day combined with an approaching cold front, which triggered severe storms and could have brought tornadoes.
The National Weather Service reports that there was damaging winds Polk County. In the Balsam Lake area at about 7:20 p.m., signs were reported down, a garage was damaged and trees up to 5 inches in diameter were down. Large pine trees were toppled in Polk County as well.
At about 8:30 p.m. a spotter reported cloud rotation near Baldwin to emergency dispatch. Nothing funneled down at that point.
Shortly after 9 p.m. a house in St. Joe Township was reported to have been struck by lightning. Somerset and St. Joe responders were called, but there was no fire from the strike.
