Wisconsin draws one of the largest crowds of competitors annual to its annual Sporting Clays State Shoot.

This year’s state shoot was held at Game Unlimited, located between New Richmond and Hudson on County Road E. The spacious acreage of Game Unlimited proved to be an ideal setting for the state shoot, which drew nearly 400 entries from Wednesday through Saturday.

Competitors from 13 states flocked to the shoot. This was the biggest state shoot in the country so far in 2014. Pete Melloy of Game Unlimited said he expected that Texas would be the only state that would draw a larger number of competitors for its state shoot this year.

Sporting clays is a variation of the sport of clay pigeon shooting. Sporting clays varies from trap and skeet shooting because it simulates the unpredictability of live-quarry shooting by offering a great variety of trajectories, angles, speeds, elevations, distances and target sizes.

There were 12 different events, all using shotguns. Competitors could enter in the state shoot, with a number of divisions within each of those events.

Game Unlimited covers more than 900 acres, which made it an ideal setting for the state shoot. A number of competitors commented glowingly about the layout of the courses around the property. One veteran competitor said it was one of the largest expanses he’s seen available for a state shoot.

The tournament drew competitors from a vast age range. There were teenagers competing in junior divisions and there were a number of senior citizens who were also competitors. Melloy said the age range represented most often at the tournament was people in their 50s and 60s.

“It’s a sport where age isn’t important. It doesn’t matter how old you are if you have the right technique,” Melloy said.
