Katie Armiger stepped into stardom as a 14-year-old when she won Houston's best country star contest in 2006.

Now, at 17 she's opening concerts for country music stars like Taylor Swift and will be performing at Country Splash this summer in Somerset.

On May 14, Armiger was in New Richmond promoting her latest album, Believe.

The teenager has written enough songs to fill three albums and kicks off her first nationwide tour on June 23, which also happens to be her birthday. Her tour will end on Aug. 16 in Minneapolis.

Before the tour, Armiger will be back in the area to kick off Country Splash in Somerset on June 18.

"All of this happened by crazy chance," she said of her busy schedule. "I never thought I'd be here right now."

Armiger said she almost didn't enter the Houston contest that catapulted her career.

"I was so nervous," she said. "I didn't think I'd win because there were hundreds of people trying out."

Now, people ask her for her autograph and stop her in airports to say "hi."

"It was extremely different when it happened the first time," she said. "I was shocked."

Armiger ended her visit to the area with an afternoon performance at Somerset High School and an evening performance at General Sam's.
