Two state-bound teams will be competing in the ViDIo Lit Hits category. Each team had to create a live music ViDIo that dramatically retells a piece of literature. The teams selected Cinderella and Frankenstein, where they had to integrate self composed music, team created lyrics, choreography, a dramatic main character, back drops, props through creativity, teamwork and problem solving.

Frankenstein team members are Ashley Beasley, Courtney Buckland, Ashton Harrell, Tayva Strom and Nicole Tetzlaff. Cinderella team members are Brittany Birrenbach, Emily Colombo, Jordyn Danielson, Kacie Larkowski, Cassie Mussehl, Kaitlin Raber and Katriana Ryther.

The New Angle team will be showing off its engineering skills. The team had to design, build and test a two-part structure made out of balsa wood, wood and glue. Also, the team members created and presented a story about the merging of two forms of art to create a new form of artistic expression. In the end the merged art form is created to be included in their play presentation. Team members are Brian Dolezal, Frank Johnson, Aaron Joppru, Rhys Linke, Ethan Pike, Tyler Kupczak and Jack Emmert.

To make it an even more exciting day two Somerset Middle school teams brought home third place trophies for their categories:

Private DI was an Improv challenge and the team members were Kylie Anderson, Chelsey Gareis and Kendra Wiswell. They had to create a six-minute improvisational skit about the origin of a randomly selected superstition in a 30-minute timed period at the tournament. Then they had to present the skit using the styles of three different film genres and integrate a sleuth that was randomly selected from a list of historical and fictional detectives the team had previously researched. They created an origin of superstition, a origin detector and integrated a randomly selected "surprise."

Instinct Messaging challenge team members were Danielle Anderson, Sydney Branom, Rachel Helgeson, Carrie Kulibert, Lexine Lynner and Angelina Meuers. The team created and presented a theatrical presentation with an original story that demonstrated creature communication. They studied squirrels and constructed costumes to communicate a message sent by their feature creature. Also, they needed to create one or more three dimensional set pieces that depicted a real-life habitat.

The Somerset Middle School Destination Imagination teams are coached by Rosanne Erickson (k-12 gifted and talented coordinator) and high school math teacher Richard Thompson.
