The New Richmond girls hockey team is on its best success streak in several years.

The Tigers are now 5-1 in their last six games after a 6-5 win at Menomonie last Thursday. The success streak has lifted the Tigers above the .500 mark, with the team's record now at 8-7.

Leading the Tigers to the win was junior Rachel Mullendore, who had a hat trick at Menomonie. Since the Tiger coaches shifted Mullendore to defense, she's been been finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

The coaches moved Mullendore to forward to pair her with freshman Megan Cox. They are the two fastest skaters on the team and both have a scorer's mentality.

"Rachel and Megan are really playing well together," said Tiger coach Jake Hetzel.

The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game on goals by Leah Egan, Cox and Mullendore. Menomonie quickly came back and the game was close the rest of the way. Freshman Caitlynn Singerhouse scored the eventual game winner 3:54 into the third period. The rest of the period went scoreless.

Four of the Tigers' five losses to Wisconsin teams this season are to teams that are currently ranked among the top 10 teams in the state. Four of the teams in this WIAA sectional are ranked in the top 10 in the state, making the Tigers' tournament trail exceedingly tough.

The Tigers finish the regular season with a string of challenging opponents that should toughen them even more for the tournaments. The Tigers play next on Thursday against Hayward. The game will be played in Amery to give the two girls on the varsity from Amery (Mullendore and Dani Edin) a home game. The Tigers will also play at home next Tuesday, when the St. Croix Valley Fusion plays here. The Fusion, containing mostly girls from River Falls, has an 11-0-1 record and is ranked number one in the state.
