The New Richmond girls hockey team is hoping this is the week they climb above .500 and stay there.

The Tigers were scheduled to play the Burnett County Blizzard on Tuesday. This Thursday the Tigers will skate at Hudson before facing Viroqua in a home game on Friday.

Last Thursday the Tigers improved their record to 5-6 with a 3-2 win over Menomonie at the New Richmond Sports Center.

The team's first line of freshmen Megan Cox, Caitlynn Singerhouse and Chelsea Singerhouse accounted for the three goals, with each of them scoring once.

Menomonie scored the only goal of the first period, scoring on a breakaway.

In the second period the Tigers scored twice, on similar goals. On the first goal, Caitlynn Singerhouse fed the puck to Cox in the slot and she snapped the puck past the Menomonie goalie. Later in the period it was Cox who set up Singerhouse for the goal.

Menomonie tied the score with a power play goal early in the second period. The Tigers broke the tie with just over three minutes left in regulation. Chelsea Singerhouse got the goal, after Rachel Mullendore set up the play from behind the net.

Tiger coach Jake Hetzel said the freshman line continues to stand out in the offensive end of the rink.

"When they get rolling, they are so much fun to watch," Hetzel said.

The Tigers outshot Menomonie 31-13 in the game. The Tigers seemed to dislike the Menomonie emblem on the front of goalie Katelyn Halama's uniform, because the Tigers fired most of their shots at the chest of the Menomonie netminder. The Tiger coaches were constantly reminding the players to try shooting for the corners, instead of trying to wear a hole through the Menomonie goalie.

Defensively the Tigers were able to control the puck well in their end of the rink. Hetzel said sophomore Josie Wold had a strong game on defense, controlling the puck well and making good decisions.
