Tiger tennis wins conference opener
The New Richmond boys tennis team got off to a promising start in the Middle Border Conference season on Monday, scoring a 5-2 win over Ellsworth.
A sweep in the singles matches secured the team victory for the Tigers on Monday. The Tigers didn't lose a set in the singles matches. Jake Kleiner scored a 6-0, 6-2 win at one singles and Blake Berger won a tough match at two singles, 6-4, 7-5. Trevor Anderson cruised through the three singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win and Kyle Mitchell had little trouble at four singles, with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
The Tiger doubles teams struggled with consistency in their matches on Monday. Logan Frey and Brent Nordquist lost in three sets at one singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Matt Tschudy and Chad Weaver ran hot-and-cold in a 7-6, 6-4 loss at two doubles.
The bright spot in doubles was a win at the three flight by Tom Skoglund and Chase Weaver, 6-2, 6-2.
Tiger coach Mike Montello has said the lineup will continue to be a work in progress.
"I will move some kids around the next couple of matches and we'll see what works," he said.
This match was played in New Richmond because Ellsworth's courts are not in playing condition.
The Tigers will be back at home on Thursday in what should be a battle for two of the top MBC contenders. Baldwin-Woodville will be the visiting team in Thursday's match. The Tigers will also be playing at home next Tuesday, with Durand as the opponent.
