The second half of the season is already better than the first half for the New Richmond boys basketball team.

After going 0-10 in the first half of the regular season, the Tiger boys finally broke into the win column last Thursday. After trailing Durand by four at halftime, the Tigers played an outstanding third quarter to lead by as many as 13 points. Durand made a charge in the final minutes, but the Tigers held on for a 67-66 win.

Ten different Tigers scored in the game, led by Cory Eller and Scott Meyer. Eller scored a game-high 22 points and Meyer chipped in with 13 points.

The Tigers came up with one of their best quarters in the season in the third quarter, when they outscored Durand 21-7. The Tigers set up Meyer for a three-point shot on the opening possession of the second half and he nailed the shot. After trailing 37-33 at halftime, the Tigers tied the score at 42-42. Eller then sank a three ball, Meyer hit a shot after a Scott Emerson steal, and Trent Bauer drained a three-pointer. Jeff Engel hit a shot at the third quarter buzzer on a nice feed by Emerson that put the Tigers ahead 54-44.

The lead grew to 13 when Meyer took a feed from Emerson and drained another three-pointer for the first points of the fourth quarter.

Durand made a charge in the final 3-4 minutes of the game. Two free throws by Emerson put the Tiger lead to four points in the final seconds, before Durand hit a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left on the clock to cut the final margin to one point.

One of the goals for the Tigers in recent games has been to play under better control and it showed in Durand. With Durand playing a widely extended zone defense, the Tigers had exceptional ball movement on offense. They had 14 assists, led by five from Emerson and four from Bauer.

The Tigers benefitted from seeing the same defense two games in a row. Two nights earlier, Eau Claire North had played the same type of defense.

"We were much crisper against Durand than North," said Tiger coach Jim Kannel. "We hadn't seen a zone defense in awhile, North prepared us for what Durand was doing."

Kannel said the good ball movement was half the reason for the success on offense. He said the Tigers also used good shot selection, waiting patiently for the high percentage shots. Meyer had the best shooting percentage, hitting all three of his shots from three-point territory and going 2-3 from two-point range.

The one area where the Tigers struggled at Durand was rebounding. The Panthers hauled down 21 offensive boards, many of them leading directly to scores for the Panthers.

Mike Skoglund and Jeff Engel led the Tigers with six rebounds each. Emerson had five steals to lead the team.

The win was big for the Tigers' psyche, especially after the 55-31 loss to Eau Claire North last Tuesday. The Huskies lived up to their name. Led by a 6-9 center, North had a height advantage of several inches at every position over the Tigers.

The game was close until the late stages of the third quarter. The Tigers trailed 24-19 at halftime and the margin was six until the Tigers had a stretch of turnovers late in the third quarter. North built the lead to 12 by the end of the quarter. North then played its starters for much of the fourth quarter to inflate the final margin.

Eller led the Tigers with 12 points against North. Engel led the team with five rebounds and Emerson's three assists were tops on the team.

The Tigers will try to move up a rung in the Middle Border Conference standings this Friday, when they are visited by the Ellsworth Panthers, the team directly above them in the standings. The Tigers will also be in action next Monday, playing a non-conference game at Barron.
