Tigers knock off Osceola

New Richmond softball coach Jim McCullum compared his team to a race horse that started slowly, then starts passing opponents once they get rolling.

The Tigers were definitely rolling Monday night, beating Osceola 3-0 behind the five-hit pitching of junior Lynnae Kistner.

With the win the Tigers move to 3-3 in Middle Border Conference play. This was Osceola's second loss in conference action this season.

It was in the fourth inning where the Tigers scored all three of their runs on Monday. Kistner led off the inning with a walk. Heather Thompson followed with a single, then Katie Stevens singled in the first run of the game. Freshman Jena O'Flanagan then doubled to leftfield to drive home Thompson and Stevens.

That was all the support Kistner would need. She struck out 11 Chieftains, while walking three and allowing five hits.

"What a pleasant surprise to have Lynnae throw as well as she has," said Tiger coach Jim McCullum.

Kistner and Heather Thompson have been sharing the pitching duties for the team this season.

"It's nice to know we've got two tough, reliable pitchers and they're interchangable at first base," McCullum said.

The Tigers had eight hits in the game, with Kistner being the only player with multiple hits.

Tigers hang on for win

New Richmond had a 9-1 lead, then had to withstand an Amery comeback attempt to win 9-8 last Friday.

The Tigers had built the lead mostly from a one-inning outburst after a week where their bats were silent. After being held scoreless for the first three innings, the Tigers found the resuscitator for their bats. In the fourth inning they rang up seven runs. A two-run single by senior Laura Mills brought home the first runs of the inning. Jessie Green singled home another run, Lynnae Kistner singled home two more and Jessie Johnston followed with another RBI single. Katie Stevens then capped the inning with another run-scoring single, the Tigers' sixth hit of the inning. They also took three walks during the rally.

Amery came back, scoring four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh before the Tigers could get the game done. Tiger defensive problems were a big part of Amery's comeback, because all seven of those runs were unearned.

Loss at Durand

The Tigers took a tough loss at Durand last Tuesday, 2-0.

Thompson threw a sharp game, only giving up three hits. She struck out eight and didn't walk a batter.

The Tigers weren't able to create much offense either, getting six hits. They also had a couple baserunning mistakes that took them out of chances to score.

This was a game where the Tigers were hurt by their own mistakes. Durand scored its first run in the fourth inning due to two Tiger errors.

"We don't make those boo-boos and we're okay," McCullum said of the fielding and base-running errors.

This week

The Tigers get their second shot at conference leader Prescott this Thursday. The Tigers lost to Prescott 1-0 in eight innings the first time the two teams met. Thursday's game will be played in Prescott.

On Monday the Tigers will play at home against Somerset. The Tigers will also be at home next Tuesday, with Ellsworth as the visiting team.
