Tigers see defense crumble against Ellsworth
Ellsworth kept its hopes of winning a Middle Border Conference title alive while dealing a harsh blow to New Richmond's chances of winning the MBC crown last Tuesday.
Ellsworth was at the top of its game, while New Richmond continued its recent struggles. Ellsworth scored a 12-1 win over the Tigers. This moves Ellsworth to 4-3 in the conference standings while the Tigers fall to 3-3.
Three New Richmond pitchers gave up 11 hits, but it was defense that was the Tigers' biggest problem. The Tigers committed seven errors, including five in Ellsworth's six-run second inning.
The loss showed the Tigers' recent tendency to quickly get down on themselves when they get behind in games. The errors left coach John Ball grasping for answers.
"It was routine stuff, they weren't hard plays," Ball said. "When we get behind nobody wants to make a mistake."
The mistakes included two dropped fly balls and a dropped third strike that was rolled back to the pitcher instead of throwing down to first base to complete the out.
Even when the Tigers had good things happen they turned out bad. In the fourth inning they picked a runner off second, only to see a throw in the rundown get dropped, allowing the runner to reach third safely.
The Tigers were kept off stride by Ellsworth pitcher Josh Richie, who threw a three hitter. Tim Kretovics had two of the hits, including a long double to centerfield in the second inning.
Get win over Clear Lake
The Tigers started slowly, but got their bats rolling in a 13-1 win over Clear Lake on Monday, June 30.
After four innings the Tigers led 3-0. They then erupted for 10 hits and 10 runs in the final two innings of the game.
Tim Kretovics had a big game for the Tigers. He continues to emerge as a pitching prospect, throwing one-hit ball over the first five innings while striking out eight.
Kretovics also came up with the big hit of the game, cracking a two-run homer in the fifth inning that put the Tigers ahead 6-0. Kretovics led the Tigers with three hits. Tim Ponath, Tommy Wells and Tyler Hanson each had two hits in the game.
