Tigers win conference tennis opener
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

The New Richmond girls tennis team got off to a promising start in the 2005 Middle Border Conference season last Thursday, scoring a 6-1 win at Mondovi in their MBC opener.

The Tigers swept the four singles matches, with Kristen Holle, Ellen Railsback, Molly O'Flanagan and Val Poppy winning their matches without giving up a set.

In doubles, the Tigers got wins at the one and three levels, with Mondovi's only win coming at two doubles.

Tiger coach Teresa Kvam said this match showed a pattern that is causing her concern.

"I'm realizing about half our team is slow starters," Kvam said. "That's something we need to remedy."

Kvam said one option may be to have the girls play for several minutes before they board the bus for road trips, a tactic that worked with a slow-starting Tiger team several years ago.

Menomonie tournament

On Saturday the Tigers got another dose of tough competition, playing in a tournament in Menomonie. The tournament field was made up of Division 1 teams from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The best finish for the Tigers was by Kristen Holle, who placed third at one singles. Holle opened the tournament by beating Chippewa Falls 6-3, 6-2. In the semifinals she met the eventual champion from Menomonie, losing 6-2, 6-1. In the third place match Holle produced a 6-1, 6-3 win.

The only other Tiger entry to finish in the top half of the bracket was the two doubles team of Jessie Meyers and Katie Suo. They opened the tournament with a grueling three-set win over Menomonie, 6-3, 3-6, 15-13. They were then beaten in the semifinals by Onalaska. They were topped in the third place match by Winona.

Kvam said Suo is one of several girls who are playing doubles after being primarily singles players in the past.

"Katie's starting to figure out the doubles movement," Kvam said. "Everything we tell them to do, they try to do."

The Tigers have a pair of conference matches scheduled for the next week, with both of them on the road. On Thursday they play at Ellsworth. Next Tuesday they will be playing at Amery.
