Town of Hammond residents approve treasurer question
A majority of residents in the Town of Hammond voted to allow the town board to make the town treasurer's position appointed, rather than elected. Linda Hawkins, Town of Hammond clerk, said the referendum was passed with 717 "yes" votes and 423 "no" votes.
This referendum follows a similar referendum also passed, that made the town clerk's position appointed.
Hawkins said the referendums are in an effort previously by the board to provide consistency for the Town of Hammond as well as ensuring the town has well-trained, qualified people in the treasurer's and clerk's positions.
The referendum grants the town board the power to make the treasurer position appointed, rather than elected. Hawkins said the referendum will likely be on the town board agenda for their December meeting.
