U12 softball team goes 3-3 at nationals
The New Richmond U12 girls softball team went 3-3 in the national tournament played in Eagan, Minn. over the weekend. Eighty-eight U12 teams played in the A and B divisions.
New Richmond began action in the tournament with two games last Thursday. The first game was against the LeSueur-Henderson Giants. New Richmond won 5-3, highlighted by strong pitching by pitcher Lauren Smith (8 strikeouts, 1 hit, 0 earned runs). Taylor Johnson led Tiger hitting. She was 2-3 (single, double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored). The second game Thursday was against the Mason City (Iowa) Crossfire, which New Richmond lost 14-0.
New Richmond's only game Friday was against the Moundsview Mustangs Green. New Richmond won 6-1. It was a team effort with another great pitching performance from Smith (7 strikeouts, 4 hits, 1 earned run) accompanied by great defense. Daniele Sabby led the Tiger hitting. She was 2-3 (2 singles, 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored).
New Richmond finished pool play with a 2-1 record
That moved New Richmond into bracket play on Saturday against Osseo/Maple Grove, with New Richmond scoring a 9-5 win. Taylor Johnson had the big hit of the game in the bottom of first inning. Down by two runs, she delivered a bases-clearing double with two outs. Katie Chwialkowski and Lauren Smith were both 2-2 with a walk. Jade Williams was also 2-2.
New Richmond's second bracket game was against the Prescott Cardinals. New Richmond lost 5-1. Another strong pitching performance was delivered by Smith and the Tiger defense was playing well. Avery Patraw (single), Williams (single) and Johnson (double) had the three hits in the game.
"The bats just didn't get going because of a great performance by the Prescott pitcher," said New Richmond coach Brian Johnson.
New Richmond's sixth game was Saturday night against Lakeville, which New Richmond lost 7-0. Katie Chwialkowski led Tiger hitting, going 2-3 (double and single). Patraw (double) and Johnson (single) were both 1-2 in the game.
