UPDATE: Schools close as snow piles up
Snow-covered roads are causing significant travel difficulties across Minnesota and Wisconsin today, Tuesday, March 5.
As a result, numerous schools have closed for the day, including New Richmond, St. Croix Central, Glenwood City, Amery and Osceola.
Plows are out trying to keep up with the snow, but they are fighting a losing battle. Up to 6 or 7 additional inches of the white stuff are expected throughout the day.
The weather caused a terrible accident along Interstate 94. The interstate was closed after a vehicle left the roadway and landed in the Red Cedar River near Menomonie.
The Wisconsin State Patrol was called to the scene of the accident at 4 a.m. indicating a semi travelling west on I-94 had lost control on snow covered roads and went into the river.
In addition to law enforcement, dive teams and tow trucks are on scene attempting to locate the driver. The semi is from Michigan.
Eastbound I-94 is closed at WIS 25 for recovery of the unit passenger. Motorists are being directed through Menomonie and back on to the interstate from WIS 12 and County B.
More information will be provided as it becomes known.
Travelers are encouraged to check winter road conditions before leaving by calling 5-1-1 or visiting 511wi.gov.
