A three-vehicle crash on Highway 35 north of Somerset has claimed the lives of two people and injured a third, according to a press release issued Tuesday night by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office.

Amanda L. Day, 34, of Osceola, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. Goldie V. Culver, 83, of Apple Valley, Minn., was flown via a LifeLink III helicopter to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., where she later died. Terry L. Baillargeon, 60, of Somerset, was taken to Lakeview Hospital with injuries. Baillargeon and Culver were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, and Day was not. 

According to the press release, Day was driving north on Highway 35 in a 2007 Honda Civic at about 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday, and and she attempted to pass Baillargeon, who was driving a 1999 Honda Accord, when she struck Baillargeon's vehicle in the driver's side rear quarter panel. The contact sent the Accord spinning into the oncoming shoulder and ditch area. Meanwhile, Culver was headed south on the Highway in a 2002 Suzuki XL7 and was struck by the Civic sending the Suzuki into the east ditch. The Civic came to a rest in the middle of the highway. 

The crash forced the closure of a portion of Highway 35 for about three hours routing traffic onto 220th Avenue, 230th Avenue, County Road I, County Road H. 

In addition to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office at the scene were personnel from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Somerset Police Department, Somerset Fire & Rescue, Town of St. Joseph Fire Department and LifeLink. 

The crash remains under investigation.

A three-vehicle accident near the St. Croix-Polk county line Tuesday afternoon has left one person dead and another seriously injured on Highway 35 near 220th Avenue, north of Somerset.

Highway 35 is closed in both directions between County Road H and 220th Avenue. Northbound traffic is being detoured onto 220th Avenue to County Road I, north on County Road I to 230th Avenue and County Road H, east on County Road H back to Highway 35.

An advisory sent by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the road will likely remain closed until at least 4:30 p.m.

The crash was reported by a passing motorist around 2:35 p.m.

One vehicle was said to be in a ditch on its roof while another came to rest in the center of the road. The occupant of a third vehicle involved was uninjured, according to radio transmissions from the scene.

A medical helicopter was en route to the scene to evacuate a patient with a severe head injury. The individual had to be extricated by firefighters and was then moved to a ground ambulance to await the air ambulance.

Fire and rescue crews from Somerset, the Town of St. Joseph and Osceola were assisting, and a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy was also being requested for traffic control.

The St. Croix County Medical Examiner was summoned at 3:11 p.m.
