Students at the University of Wisconsin's four-year campuses will pay 5.5 percent more next fall.

The Board of Regents approved the tuition hikes yesterday in Milwaukee.

Undergrads at Madison and Milwaukee will pay almost $350 more for the year.

The other four-year schools will get a $265 increase.

Tuition will be frozen for another year at the two-year colleges, so they can stay competitive on price with the tech schools.

More than half the tuition increase will cover a growing number of veterans getting free educations under a 2006 law.

About 3,100 veterans took advantage this year, and that number is expected to grow 10 percent next year.

Some Regents said other students would resent paying more for the vets - and they wanted a one-time surcharge for this year only. The board decided against that.

The program will get another $18 million next fall.
