Just like in other industries, the University of Wisconsin is concerned that its workforce is getting older.

One of every three University of Wisconsin faculty and staff members is 55-or-older.

It was one-of-every-five a decade ago.

The university's Board of Regents will discuss the matter on Thursday.

Green Bay chancellor David Ward says there are two potential problems with the so-called "graying of academia."

One is that there are fewer potential professors going into doctorate programs at a time when worldwide faculty recruiting is more competitive.

econd, he says older professors are higher on the pay scale and the UW will have to pay that much more in order to stay competitive.

he Regents are not expected to take any action on the subject this week. They'll consider it next month when employee pay raises are up.
