UW Regents wait till June for disciplinary decision
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents will wait until June to decide whether to punish students for things they do off-campus. A board committee discussed the new policy Thursday.

And some people questioned a proposal to let students have lawyers speak for them during their disciplinary proceedings.

A UW Madison hearing examiner was among those raising concerns. They said the proceedings should be lessons in themselves, instead of being court-like confrontations.

But Milwaukee student Kyle Duerstein says students need to have representation when things like expulsions are being sought.

The new policy would let UW officials impose anything from reprimands to suspensions and expulsions for repeated offenses off-campus that reflect badly on the students and the schools.

A university panel spent two years working on the new measure, after residents near UW-Milwaukee complained of rowdy student behavior and vandalism in their neighborhood.

The code was softened a bit in recent weeks after the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education called some parts too restrictive of students' rights.

Even with the one month delay, supporters hope the new policy can still take effect this fall.
