Vernon Orf, age 88, of Cumberland and formerly of St. Joseph Township, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake, Wis.
Vern was born on Aug. 3, 1920 at the family farm in St. Joseph Township to Adam and Amelia (Kirchner) Orf. Vern was the youngest of 13 children. Vern graduated from Somerset High School, and continued farming with his brothers Harold and Clarence. Vern was a great inventor, and would often create things that would make the farm work easier.
Vern loved to work and build things with his hands, and later became a carpenter and cabinet maker. Vern built many of the homes in the area, and was known for his exceptional work and craftsmanship.
On June 10, 1961 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Burkhardt, Vern was married to Marlys Evenson, and together they raised their daughter Kris. Vern built their home on a piece of the family farm. Vern continued to invent, build and work on all kinds of projects throughout his life. Besides his exceptional work, Vern was also known for his good conversation, and he loved to tell a good story. He will be missed by many.
Vern is survived by his wife, Marlys; daughter Kris (Randy) Mattson; grandchildren, Kevin John Meeds, Scott Matthew Meeds, Adrian Randahl Mattson and Ariane Nicole Mattson; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and good friends. Vern was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; and five sisters.
Funeral services for Vernon Orf were 11 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hudson, 1205 Sixth St., Hudson, with Pastor Tim Booth officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to services. Interment in the Willow River Cemetery.
