The gym at the Community Commons has been transformed into a packing station for the weekend.

The Feed My Starving Children organization has, with the help of about 1,000 volunteers in New Richmond, packed 241,000 meals on Friday and Saturday.

According to organizers, the meals will eventually make their way to countries like Haiti and Nicaragua and to the continent of Africa.

Set up in the Community Commons (the old middle school building), the mobile MannaPack event exceeded expectations of all involved. will welcome upwards of 1,000 volunteers over the two days.

There were seven two-hour volunteer packing sessions over the two days (three Friday, June 22, and four Saturday, June 23.)

Excitement filled the old middle school gym as hundreds of individually-wrapped meals were put together and sealed for packing. The finished boxes of meals were then traferred to a waiting semi-truck for transportation to Feed My Starving Children's warehouse in Eagan, Minn.

Each packing session began with a brief training gathering. There are various jobs that people could participate in and the event was open to any age.

The event was hosted by the Rotary Club of New Richmond, with financial and volunteer help from local churches, businesses and individuals.
