April seems a long way off right now, but it’s already time to start thinking about the various local elections that will happen then. The filing period for many of those races opened Dec. 1.

Election Day is April 1 this spring, with a primary on Feb. 18, if needed. To get on the ballot for those elections, individuals must file with the proper authority. Filing deadlines vary from Jan. 2 in the City of New Richmond, to Jan. 7 in many other municipalities. Some municipalities use a caucus process to nominate candidates.

For some races, candidates must gather a minimum number of signatures after filing a declaration of candidacy. Area voters may have a variety of races on their April 1 ballots, including school board candidates, county supervisor candidates and likely multiple local municipality races.

The following is a guide of which public offices in the New Richmond area are up for election this spring.

City of New Richmond

In the City of New Richmond, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with City Clerk Tanya Reigel at the New Richmond Civic Center. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2.

Offices up for election:

— Mayor (two-year term, $12,000 per year) current incumbent Fred Horne; 50 signatures required

— District 4 Alderperson (two-year term, $7,000 per year) current incumbent Jane Hansen; 20 signatures required

— District 5 Alderperson (two-year term, $7,000 per year) current incumbent Ron Volkert; 20 signatures required

— District 6 Alderperson (two-year term, $7,000 per year) current incumbent Jim Zajkowski; 20 signatures required

Village of Hammond

In the Village of Hammond, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with Village Clerk Sandi Hazer at Hammond Village Hall. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Offices up for election:

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $900 per year) current incumbent Mary Rivard; 20 signatures required

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $900 per year) current incumbent Lynn Pabst; 20 signatures required

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $900 per year) current incumbent Mark Benton; 20 signatures required

— Municipal Judge (four-year term, $900 per year) current incumbent Sandra Nelson; 20 signatures required

Village of Roberts

In the Village of Roberts, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with Village Clerk/Treasurer Doreen Kruschke at Roberts Village Hall. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Offices up for election:

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $1,200 per year) current incumbent Nathan Stork; 20 signatures required

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $1,200 per year) current incumbent Terry Dull; 20 signatures required

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $1,200 per year) current incumbent Margaret Wolske; 20 signatures required

Village of Somerset

In the Village of Somerset, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with Village Clerk Pamela Donohoe at Somerset Village Hall. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Offices up for election:

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $2,100 per year) current incumbent David Carufel; 20 signatures required

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $2,100 per year) current incumbent Bartt Palmer; 20 signatures required

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $2,100 per year) current incumbent Ryan Sicard; 20 signatures required

Village of Star Prairie

In the Village of Star Prairie, those interested in running for office must be nominated at the village caucus. The date of the caucus will be no earlier than Jan. 7, and no later than Jan. 28. Notice of the caucus date will be posted at least five days in advance.

Offices up for election:

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $2,000 per year, plus $40 per meeting) current incumbent Andrew Marrier

— Village Trustee (two-year term, $2,000 per year, plus $40 per meeting) current incumbent Gary Peterson

Town of Cylon

No offices are up for election in 2014.

Town of Erin Prairie

No offices are up for election in 2014.

Town of Hammond

In the Town of Hammond, those interested in running for office must come to the Town Caucus at the Town Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, with a qualified elector to nominate him/her.

Offices up for election

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $1,400 per year, $60 per meeting) current incumbent Paulette Anderson

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $1,400 per year, $60 per meeting) current incumbent Kent Wynveen

Town of Richmond

In the Town of Richmond, those interested in running for office must come to the Town Caucus at the Town Hall with a qualified elector to nominate him/her. The caucus date has yet to be determined, but will be no earlier than Jan. 7 and no later than Jan. 28.

Offices up for election:

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $2,858.18 per year) current incumbent Richard Berquist

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $2,858.18 per year) current incumbent David Naser

Town of Saint Joseph

In the Town of Saint Joseph, those interested in running for office must come to the Town Caucus at the Town Hall with a qualified elector to nominate him/her. The caucus will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 9.

Offices up for election:

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $4,500 per year) current incumbent Thomas Spaniol

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $4,500 per year) current incumbent Brian Gullickson

Town of Somerset

In the Town of Somerset, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with Town Clerk Jeri Koester at the Town Clerk office. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Offices up for election:

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $8,000 per year) current incumbent Shane Demulling; 20 signatures required

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $8,000 per year) current incumbent Lenny Germain; 20 signatures required

Town of Stanton

No offices are up for election in 2014.

Town of Star Prairie

In the Town of Star Prairie, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with Town Clerk Mike Burke at the Town Clerk office. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Officials choosing to not run for re-election must file a notice of non-candidacy by 5 p.m., Dec. 27.

Offices up for election:

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $5,553 per year) current incumbent Tom Heintz; 25-30 signatures required

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $5,553 per year) current incumbent Patty Schachtner; 25-30 signatures required

Town of Warren

In the Town of Warren, those interested in running for office must appear at the Town Caucus at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 at the Town Hall with a qualified elector to nominate him/her.

Offices up for election:

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $2,624.82 per year) current incumbent Gerald Mueller

— Town Board Supervisor (two-year term, $2,624.82 per year) current incumbent Ann Magee

New Richmond School District

In the school district of New Richmond, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with the School District office in New Richmond. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Jan. 7.

— Board member (three-year term, $3,000 per year) current incumbent Marilyn Duerst

— Board member (three-year term, $3,000 per year) current incumbent Paula Kolbeck

— Board member (three-year term, $3,000 per year) current incumbent Chris Skoglund

Saint Croix Central School District

In the school district of St. Croix Central, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with the School District office at the Middle School in Hammond. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Jan. 7.

— Board member (three-year term, $50 per regular/learning meeting) current incumbent John Haug

— Board member (three-year term, $50 per regular/learning meeting) current incumbent David Olsen

Somerset School District

In the school district of Somerset, those interested in running for office must file paperwork with the School District office in Somerset The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Jan. 7.

Offices up for election:

— Vice President (three-year term, $1,800 per year) current incumbent Robert Gunther

— Clerk (three-year term, $1,800 per year) current incumbent Marie Colbeth

St. Croix County

To run for a county supervisor seat in St. Croix County, those interested must file paperwork with County Clerk Cindy Campbell at the St. Croix County Government Center in Hudson. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
