Waukesha's Hamm bows out of Olympics because of injury
Gymnast Paul Hamm says he did everything he could, but there just wasn't enough time for him to heal.
Hamm told leadership of the U.S. Olympic team he is withdrawing from the Beijing competition.
The gymnastics team leaves next Wednesday and competes for the first time a week from Saturday.
As Hamm tried to speed up his recovery from the broken hand suffered last May, he evidently strained his left rotator cuff.
The athlete from Wisconsin says it wouldn't be fair to the team if he only competed in events his physical limitations allow.
The team needed the gold medal winner to compete on the rings and that is one of the gymnastics areas his rotator cuff wouldn't let him pursue.
