Western Wisconsin Stars skate to state title
The Western Wisconsin Stars are state champions.
The Stars earned the championship in their state tournament, held at River Falls on March 9-10.
The Stars defeated Green Bay 1-0 in a tense and exciting state championship game. Makenzie Weeks scored four minutes into the game and a hearty defensive effort helped the Stars maintain that lead through the rest of the game.
The Stars began the tournament by beating the Fury from Janesville, 4-1. In the semifinals Superior was the opponent, with the Stars scoring a 4-3 victory.
The Stars' season record in D2 League (comprised of western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota teams) was 7-8-1. They played in three regular season tournaments, placing first in Altoona, first in New Richmond and second at the Cowtown Tournament in South St. Paul. The Stars U10 team went to state last year, taking second place to the Hudson U10 team 2-1 in overtime.
The Stars get to showcase their skills in front of a large audience this Friday. They will be skating at the intermission of the 8 p.m. game of the Frozen Four weekend at Ridder Arena at the University of Minnesota.
