The local girls youth hockey teams performed extremely well in their state tournaments over the past two weekends.

Over the weekend, the U12 Western Wisconsin Stars took second place in their state tournament. This came a week after the U10 Western Wisconsin Stars won a state championship.

The U12 girls played in their WAHA state tournament in Verona over the weekend. They played strong all weekend, scoring 18 goals, while allowing five goals against them.The Stars opened the tournament against the host Wisconsin Ice Spirit. The Stars quickly took control, showing a great deal of offensive firepower in a 10-1 win.In the semifinals the Stars faced the Central Wisconsin Storm. The Stars continued their dominant play, storming the Storm, 6-0.
That win moved the Stars into the state championship game where they faced a familiar foe, the Hudson Raiders. This was the same team they lost to in the state championship game two years ago. Hudson was flying at the start of the game, building a 3-0 lead. The Stars fought back, cutting Hudson's lead to 3-2. Hudson wouldn't let the Stars get any closer, winning the state title with a 4-2 win.The U12 Stars completed an outstanding season with a 26-4-7 record. They finished third in Minnesota District 2 league play with a 9-3-4 record and they earned tournament championships in New Richmond, Beloit and St. Paul, Minn.The U10 Stars successfully defended its state title the previous weekend in Black River Falls. The reigning state champs combined an aggressive style and stingy defense, scoring 14 goals in the tournament while allowing just two goals.
The U10 Stars opened the state tournament by facing the host team, Wisconsin TNT. The Stars established their defense immediately, limiting the TNT to four shots on goal in a 4-1 Stars victory.The Stars put together a blistering offensive effort in their semifinal win over the Dane County Diamonds. The Stars moved on to the championship game by defeating the Diamonds 7-1.The state championship game proved to be a rematch of the 2013 title game, with the Stars again facing the Green Bay Bobcats. The Stars won the 2013 title game by a 1-0 score and it looked like the 2014 game was going to be just as close.The Stars scored the only goal of the first period and the second period was scoreless, with the Bobcats fighting off several excellent scoring chances by the Stars. The Stars finally broke the game open in the third period, scoring twice to record a 3-0 shutout in the state championship game.
The U10 Stars had a dazzling season, finishing with a 28-0-2 record. They finished atop the Minnesota District 2 league play with a 14-0-2 record. They also won tournaments in New Richmond and Mora, Minn., during the season.
