WIAA announces new basketball tournament re-alignment
The WIAA has unveiled a plan to revamp boys and girls high school basketball.
A fifth division would be added and private schools would have to move up one division if they're in a district with more than one public high school, or if there's a public high school among the 30 largest in the state.
Officials say the plan addresses concerns that private schools have a competitive advantage in larger areas because they have a bigger base for drawing athletes.
Also, the plan tries to handle concerns about enrollment disparities in Division One.
The 489 teams would be split into five divisions, and the new grouping would be the first since 1991.
The WIAA will now seek input at regional meetings around the state.
