Wisconsinite gets gold in Bejing; Redd helps Team USA trounce China
Wisconsin got its first gold medal at the Beijing Olympics when swimmer Garrett Weber-Gale of Fox Point helped the U.S. 400-meter relay team win its final in a come-from-behind fashion.
Weber-Gale swam the second leg and Michael Phelps won his second gold medal in that race.
But it was Jason Lezak who passed Alain Bernard of France in the final lap and he barely out-touched Bernard at the wall in a world record time of three-minutes, 8.24-seconds.
In gymnastics, Chellsie Memmel of West Allis fell off the uneven bars 30 seconds into her routine. She placed 13th and did not qualify for the individual event finals.
However, Memmel can still win a team gold as the Americans advanced to the team finals on Wednesday.
China was first in the team preliminaries. The Americans were second despite falls from Memmel and Nastia Liukin on the bars.
In Olympic basketball, Milwaukee Bucks' guard Michael Redd hit 3-7 from three-point-range, to help Team USA trounce China 101-70 Sunday.
Redd also had three rebounds and one assist to go with his nine points in the men's opener.
Former Marquette guard Dwayne Heat of the Miami Heat led the Americans with 19 off the bench.
Former Bucks' forward Yi Jianlian had nine points and three rebounds as China was out-scored 25-11 in the third quarter to give the U.S. a 74-48 lead at that point.
The Americans' next game is Tuesday against Angola.
Meanwhile, Bucks' center Andrew Bogut had 10 points for Australia in 97-82 loss to Croatia. Bogut started after suffering an ankle injury last week. He had one rebound and two assists in 21 minutes.
Bogut and his Australian team return to action tomorrow against Argentina.
In sailing, Sally Barkow of Nashotah was part of a U.S. sailing team that was in fourth place after 4-11 races in the Yngling class.
In rowing, Wisconsin grads Beau Hoopman and Micah Boyd were competing in the men's eight heats overnight.
They were postponed by rain Sunday and Megan Kalmoe of St. Croix Falls was scheduled to compete in a double sculls rowing race against Australia, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic early this morning.
