Youth wrestlers compete at 2009 state meet
New Richmond and Somerset wrestlers took part in the 2009 Wisconsin State Youth Wrestling Tournament at the Allina Center in Madison.
The local wrestlers performed quite well, led by a state championship performance from Somerset's Gabe Flandrick.
New Richmond had seven wrestlers qualify for the 2009 state meet.
Derek Dowd was New Richmond's top finisher, placing third at 85 pounds in the 1996-97 bracket. Dowd opened the match with a 5-0 win, then scored a pin in the quarterfinals. His only loss came on a 2-1 decision in the semifinals. Dowd bounced back to win a pair of close matches. He won 2-0 in the consolation bracket, then 1-0 in the third place match.
New Richmond had a pair of wrestlers take fourth place. Abe Anderson and Shane Blackman were both able to earn fourth place finishes.
Casey Turnipseed was able to place fifth in the 105-pound bracket for 1996-97 birth years.
New Richmond's Austin Anderson, Dylan Dowd and Dillon Minke qualified for state, but weren't able to place at the meet.
Flandrick's state championship led the efforts of Somerset's Red and Black Wrestling Club at the state meet. Flandrick started the tournament with a 10-1 major decision against Chase Maxwell from Pulaski. Next he was against Dylan Diebitz from West Allis. Although Diebitz has four state championships under his belt, this did not faze Flandrick in his quest. In a smart well-planned match, Gabe controlled the match and earned a 4-0 victory. Flandrick moved on to the semifinal match against Stetson McCulley from Valders. McCulley was a powerful wrestler earning a first period takedown. Flandrick hit a great switch, tying the match 2-2. With a scoreless third period that brought the match into overtime. From the tie-up position Flandrick got deep in on a single leg takedown and drove into a double leg scoring the takedown and the win in overtime.
That moved Flandrick into the championship match against another returning state champ, River Valley's Seth Liegel. After several flurries of scrambles on takedown attempts by both wrestlers, the match remained scoreless after the first period. Flandrick was in the down position in the second period and neither wrestler was able to score. In the third period Liegel was about to score a late period escape point when Gabe put Liegel to his back earning three nearfall points and 3-0 win and an impressive state title victory.
Somerset's Bailey White fought back after a second round loss and earned a fourth place finish. Bobby LeRoy lost his first two matches to tough opponents knocking him out of the tournament.
This weekend several Somerset Wrestling Club wrestlers will be battling in the National Wrestling Tournament in Cedar Falls Iowa for a national title. Scheduled to compete at the national meet are youth wrestlers Bailey White, Gabe Flandrick, Haydon Dvorak, Austin Bushinger, Trevor Bushinger and Jeremy Kelly and veteran wrestlers Cory Warman, Mike Kappers and John Melvin.
