Youth wrestlers from New Richmond, Somerset and Central compete at state
The New Richmond, Somerset and St. Croix Central wrestling programs were well represented at the 2012-13 Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Folkstyle State Championships on Saturday.
New Richmond had six wrestlers competing in the state championships and two came home as state medalists.
Bryce Younger was the most successful of the Tiger wrestlers, placing third in the 120-pound weight class in the 1998-99 age bracket. Younger opened the tournament with a pin, but was defeated in his second round match by the wrestler who would take second place. Younger then moved to the back side of the bracket, where he reeled off four straight wins to earn third place.
Hunter Schutte was able to bring home the sixth place trophy for the 120-pound bracket in the 2004-05 age group. Schutte went 1-3 in the matches he wrestled in the tournament.
Alex Schmidt opened with a win in the 160-pound bracket of the 1998-99 age group. He was then defeated in his next two matches.
Jake LaVenture competed in the 115-pound weight class of the 2000-01 age bracket. LaVenture was defeated in both of his matches at state.

Abby Bushinger, Preston Anez and Austin Anez participated at the Wisconsin Youth State Wrestling Tournament.
Bushinger pinned her way into the finals. She then suffered her only loss of the tournament in the championship match. She took second place in the girls 85-pound division. Bushinger was part of a 14-girl state bracket, reflecting an increased interest in girls wrestling.
Preston Anez wrestled in the 85-pound division and lost two close matches. Austin Anez wrestled in the 107-pound weight class. He lost his first match, then won his second and lost his third. Austin and Preston Anez are cousins and are both in seventh grade.
