Blues group comes to Hillside Series

Next week, Davey J and the Jones Tones will perform at the Heritage Center Bandstand as part of the Hillside Series in New Richmond.

They are a roots music combo with a feel for Delta and Chicago shuffle-style blues that you won’t find anywhere else in Wisconsin. And yet, the band has a musical range that brings them into rock and roll, reggae, alt country and urban folk.

Delivered in a four-piece combo with bass, electric guitar, drums and distinctive amplified acoustic guitar up front, Davey J and the Jones Tones excel at dynamic and subtle playing, with strong vocals.

They are well known in the Chippewa Valley, having performed for more than a decade in the area, including appearances at the Blues on the Chippewa Festival in Durand, Tuesday Night Blues and the Open Air Festival of the Arts in Eau Claire, Fanny Hill Dinner Theater (where they spent a summer as the pit band for the Patsy Cline tribute show “Always”), the Mabel Tainter Theater in Menomonie, and the James Sheeley House in Chippewa Falls.

The band has had the same core lineup for nearly a decade. In addition to his work in performing live music, Davey J is also a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, teaching courses in literature, American cultural history, and the cultural history of blues and rock and roll. His deep understanding of blues and rock and roll history is evident in his playing.

The other band members include Catya on bass (also a solo artist with Catya’s Trio and Code Blue), Duffy Duyfhuizen on guitar (who also performs with Eggplant Heroes), and John LeBrun on drums (who has performed with Code Blue, the Lucy Creek Band, and many others).

The music starts at 6:30 p.m., but plan to come early. Bring along a picnic supper, a picnic blanket or lawn chairs and get ready to dance a little, sing along, or just sit back and enjoy the music.

The evening’s sponsor is Royal Credit Union. Messes & Masterpieces will offer an art project for the kids, and there will be pop and popcorn available for sale.

This is a rain or shine event. In case of inclement weather, we’ll move into the Pavilion, with limited seating. Call 715-246-3276 for more information.
