Theater, dance classes scheduled at Old Gem

The Old Gem Theater is offering a variety of classes in acting, dance and musical theater for adults and kids beginning Feb. 28.

Classes for adults include "Musical Theater for Fitness" and "Introduction to Acting." Both classes emphasize fun and require no previous theater experience.

The musical theater class will learn song and dance routines from hit Broadway shows to get you moving and energized.

The acting class will increase confidence and poise. It's a great way to improve public speaking skills.

Classes for youth include "Young Performers Ensemble," "Imagination Station," "Glee Club" and a variety of new dance classes.

The "Young Performers Ensemble" class meets four times a week and teaches students 8 years old and older how to act, sing and dance for musical theater, and will culminate in a performance of Rogers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella."

"Imagination Station," for students 5 to 7 years old, introduces the youngest aspiring stars to the world of the theater. It meets two times each week in preparation for the students' presentation of a sketch as pre-show entertainment before "Cinderella."

The "Glee Club" is a less time-intensive class for students 8 years old and older who love to sing. Students will learn hit songs and choreography in this swing-choir style class.

This session, the Old Gem is introducing a series of dance classes taught by company member, Rita Tredal. Classes include ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical and hip hop for students from 3 years old and older. Students will learn technique and develop passion for dance in a theatrical setting.
