Area artists release new book

For the month of May, artZ Gallery in Amery will present the work of member painter Sister Kristine Haugen along with member potter Win Herberg.

The gallery will also conducts its first ever book launch. The DaVinci Club represents the work of six regional artists including artZ members Judy Hostvet/Paulson and Tom Lindfors. The public is invited to meet all the artists at an opening reception Friday evening, May 11, from 5-8 p.m. Conversations with the artists begin at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition opens May 1 and continues through May 31.

Haugen has called Amery home for more than 30 years. Despite taking up watercolors just ten years ago, and minus any formal art training, she has become an accomplished painter who appreciates the semi-abstract realism traditional watercolor techniques provide.

Herberg of Frederic started throwing on a wheel but ultimately elected to hand build her pottery, which includes everything from platters, bowls and buttons to sculptural canoes, bears and wall hangings. In her newest collection, she experiments with combinations of glazes effecting an "aura" or bleeding of color in the layers of glaze.

The DaVinci Club book was created by six western Wisconsin artists to define their connection to this landscape and deliver their work directly to the commercial market. The artists, Judy Anderson, Barbara Riegel Bend, Tom Lindfors, Charlie Nielsen, Judy Hostvet/Paulson and Jon Michel Route have all previously exhibited their work at artZ and will be on-hand to talk about the project and answer questions at the reception.
