SCAF organization seeks holiday party no shows

St. Croix Animal Friends is inviting people not to come to their holiday party.

SCAF is holding a "No Show Holiday Christmas Party" this holiday season. SCAF President Diana Neubarth said instead of holding an actual holiday party to raise money, SCAF is asking people to donate money in the name of avoiding one of several common holiday party nuisances.

SCAF's suggested gift list includes: a $10 donation in the name of dodging unwanted kisses underneath the mistletoe, a $20 donation in the name of not baking for a cookie exchange, $50 in the name of avoiding being the recipient of a re-gifted Secret Santa gift, $75 in the name of not needing to clean up when the party's over and $100 in the name of staying home with a pet to watch "It's a Wonderful Life."

SCAF is a nonprofit organization that aims to build an animal shelter on land they have purchased in Roberts when they acquire the necessary funds.

SCAF held a holiday bake sale fundraiser previously, which Neubarth said was successful, but difficult to make happen during the holiday season.

"It was getting to the point where more and more people are working, so it was more difficult for people to find the time to bake," Neubarth said.

So last year, instead of holding a bake sale, SCAF held a "no show" bake sale, an idea brought to SCAF by board member Judy Webster.

"It's a way for us to raise funds during a month when, usually, people are busy," Neubarth said.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help SCAF support several programs that benefit pets and their owners, Neubarth said. SCAF supports the spay and neuter program, reaching out program and the microchipping program.

Neubarth said the spay and neuter program helps control the pet population.

"There are way too many pets and not enough homes," Neubarth said.

The microchipping program helps reunite families with their lost pets quickly and the reaching out program helps struggling families afford to keep their pets, Neubarth explained.
