The WIAA winter tournaments begin this weekend, with regional wrestling tournaments being held all over the state. The tournament hockey schedule begins for state boys and girls teams next week. Here is a rundown on where the local teams will be competing in the wrestling and hockey tournaments.

Wrestling

New Richmond will be competing in Division 1 in wrestling. That starts with the River Falls Division 1 regional at River Falls on Saturday, where wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. Qualifiers from River Falls will advance to the D.C. Everest Division 1 Sectional Meet on Saturday, Feb. 16. D.C. Everest High School is located in Schofield. The championship team at River Falls will advance to the WIAA Team Sectional Meet, which will be held at Wausau West High School on Tuesday.

Somerset and St. Croix Central will be competing in the Osceola Division 2 Regional Meet on Saturday, where competition begins at 11 a.m. Qualifiers advance to the Somerset Division 2 Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 16. The regional team champion will advance to Tuesday’s Amery Team Sectional Tournament, which begins at 6 p.m.

Boys hockey

New Richmond drew the fourth seed and Somerset the seventh seed in the boys sectional bracket. New Richmond gets and opening bye, then plays at home on Friday, Feb. 15 against Webster at 7 p.m.

Somerset opens tournament play at home next Tuesday in a 7 p.m. game against Spooner.

Girls hockey

New Richmond earned the fifth seed in the WIAA sectional tournament bracket. The Tigers open tournament play on Thursday, Feb. 14 at Hudson in a 5 p.m. game. The winner of that game will play at River Falls at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
