Two from Amery die in Highway 8 crash

Two people from Amery died Friday morning when their vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and was hit by a semitrailer rig in Polk County.

Two people from Amery died Friday morning when their vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and was hit by a semitrailer rig in Polk County.

The accident happened at around 7:15 a.m. when Scott Schilke, 24, was driving a 2002 Ford Focus westbound on Highway 8, just west of 15th Street, in the Town of Beaver.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Department Schilke lost control of the vehicle and it slid into the eastbound lane.

The car was then struck by the tractor-trailer rig which was being driven by Richard Benson, 49, Bruce.

The passenger in the car driven by Schilke was Heather Osborne, 23.

Both Schilke and Osborne were pronounced dead on the scene by the Polk County deputy medical examiner.

Benson was not injured.

The rig driven by Benson was owned by Viessman Leasing of Gary, S.D., but was leased to Gibson Transfer of Rice Lake.

Because of the accident officials had to close down Highway 8 for a short time.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Department.

The Wisconsin State Patrol, Polk County Highway Department and the Turtle Lake police and fire departments assisted on the scene. The Cumberland Ambulance Service also responded.
