The Milwaukee Brewers are back in sole possession of first place in the National League Central, after sweeping the Cincinnati Reds during the weekend.
The Brewers have a one-game lead on St. Louis, after a 5-2 Milwaukee victory yesterday at Miller Park, coupled with a 5-3 Cardinals’ loss at San Francisco.
Mike Cameron hit a two-run homer and a run-scoring single – and he also committed one of three Milwaukee errors on the day.
The Brewers scored all their runs in the first three innings. Mat Gamel went 2-3 with an RBI, ending an 0-16 slump.
Yovani Gallardo picked up the victory, and got eight of his first nine outs on strike-outs.
But he only had one three-up/three-down inning. And Gallardo labored through five and two-thirds frames, giving up two runs on seven hits with a pair of walks to go with nine total K’s.
Gallardo is now 5-2. Mitch Stetter and Mark DiFelice combined for two and one-third scoreless innings.
And then Trevor Hoffman struck out the side in the ninth, giving up his first walk of the season, to get his 13th save.
Brandon Phillips went 2-4 with a homer. Micah Owings took the loss. He’s now 3-6.
The Brewers became just the second National League team to win their 30th game.
The L.A. Dodgers have 35 wins.
Tonight, Milwaukee opens a four-game series at Florida. Right-hander Jeff Suppan will face Marlins’ southpaw Andrew Miller.
