Weather pushed the Ellsworth Invitational Track Meet back from Friday to Monday, but that didn’t stop the New Richmond track teams from putting together impressive efforts.
The Tiger boys were meet champions, edging Osceola by three points for the title. New Richmond’s girls took second place in the meet, behind Ellsworth.
Because of the rescheduling, only five of the original nine teams expected at the meet were able to compete. New Richmond, Ellsworth, Osceola, Cannon Falls and Baldwin-Woodville competed in the meet.
New Richmond was able to win the boys title based on a number of top individual finishes. The Tigers swept most of the wins in the running events. Brian Figueroa won the 100 and 200 meters. Trey Brotzler won the 400 and 800 meters. Jack Wickham won the 1600 meters.
Wins also came in the field events. John Peper won the discus throw and Alex Thorson won the shot put. Brett Anderson had a king-sized night in the jumping events. He won the triple jump and long jump and took second in the high jump. His triple jump distance was an impressive 41 feet, 11 inches.
The Tiger boys also finished the night with one of their best efforts. The team of Calvin Hanson, Anderson, Figueroa and Brotzler cut their time in the 1600 relay from 3:40 to 3:31 to win the closing event on Monday.
Ellsworth won the girls title, with New Richmond and Osceola in close pursuit. These three teams and Somerset are all putting up a strong case as they work toward the Middle Border Conference Meet, which will be held on Tuesday, May 13.
Seniors earned the Tigers several individual event wins. Maggie Demulling was a double winner, in the 200 and 400 meters. Kassie Kunz was the champion in the 100 meters and Brenda Croes was the top finisher in the discus.
The Tiger girls also looked strong in the relays, earning wins in the 800 and 1600 meter relays.
