As the rain clouds rolled in Saturday, Sept. 13, Library supporters swung their clubs at Badlands Golf Course for the 2008 Hazel Mackin Golf Classic.
Over $9,000 was netted for the new Library building fund after expenses.
With the aid of the $250,000 matching grant the Library received from the Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation this summer, the $9,000 will actually be worth $18,000.
Seventeen teams of four people played in the tournament. Most were from the Roberts and Warren area except for one team. The three-generational team of Barb and Don Larson, Bev Larson (Don’s mother) and Jared Larson (Don’s son) came from St. Paul to play.
Library Board president Dora Rohl said there were 104 steak dinners served. About 35 of those were dinner-only guest who didn’t walk the links.
Ten items were up for bid in the silent auction. The most popular and highest bids were for an Iraqi rug and a bar/stool set. The rug sold for $550 and the bar took in $600.
More than 100 items were donated for the raffle drawings.
The Library’s fund-raising committee thanks everyone for their support and donations.
“Everyone had a great time,” Rohl said. “We’re already planning for next year.”
Chili dinner planned
The next fund-raising event for the Library will be a chili dinner on Nov. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cross Lutheran Church in Roberts.
There will be a craft and bake sale held in conjunction with the dinner.
Event Chairperson Jan Manore said they will be serving chili, corn bread, pie, ice cream and cookies. All proceeds will go to the Hazel Mackin Community Library building fund.
Manore said donations of crafts and baked goods are needed. Contributions can be dropped off the day of the event starting at 1 p.m. at the church.
More plans for the chili dinner are still in the making. For questions or more information, call Jan Manore at 749-3590 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
