Letter: Help for stuttering should be offered early

I am writing in response to your “Around Town” column last week about the meeting of the group for people who stutter in New Richmond.

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to your “Around Town” column last week about the meeting of the group for people who stutter in New Richmond. Dr. Jerry Halvorson should be commended for his perseverance in starting this group.

I just want to point out to your readers that all experts agree that early intervention with speech therapy for a child can make the difference in preventing the child for a lifetime of stuttering.

The Web site of The Stuttering Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org) has a national listing of speech therapist that specialize in stuttering. The site also has several streaming videos in addition to many downloadable brochures.

While there are many diverse theories on the treatment of childhood stuttering, all experts agree that early speech therapy is a must.
