Work began on Nov. 19 to provide in-house facilities for upgraded magnetic resonance imaging equipment at Westfields Hospital in New Richmond.
The new top-of-the-line, 16-channel Toshiba MRI scanner will be housed in a modular building currently under construction in Hartland, Wis. The cassette building will connect to the imaging department and a new entrance to the MRI will be through the current patient waiting area in Imaging.
Quality and speed will be much improved over the current eight-channel system in the mobile unit, not to mention, greater comfort and accessibility for patients. The new service has the potential for 24 hour/365 days of coverage as compared to the current part-time, weekday schedule.
Westfields Hospital officials hope to have the service available for use by mid-winter following required state inspections and certifications.
