Our View: Support the effort to save a local gem
The local supporters of the New Richmond Area YMCA, who worked long and hard to get the facility established here, had to feel a bit deflated when they heard the news that the YMCA of Greater St. Paul will likely withdraw from the local operation.
The local supporters of the New Richmond Area YMCA, who worked long and hard to get the facility established here, had to feel a bit deflated when they heard the news that the YMCA of Greater St. Paul will likely withdraw from the local operation.
But the can-do attitude of those involved in the recreation and community center’s previous successes didn’t allow them to sulk long.
A handful of committed leaders have been working overtime to ensure that New Richmond area residents continue to have access to one of the greatest recreational facilities in this part of the state. Their efforts should be applauded.
Really, there was never any doubt that local business leaders and elected officials would rally to the task.
But they can’t accomplish the task all by themselves.
That’s why support from local businesses, municipalities, schools and individuals will be the key to continued operation of the soon-to-be-renamed New Richmond Area Centre.
We each play a role in promoting the important programs and services provided at the community-owned facility. And if it fits the family budget, it makes sense to become a member to help keep the facility financially self-sustaining for years to come.
Those scrambling to shore up the operation say they’re committed to making memberships affordable for everyone.
As the time approaches for each of us to set out New Year’s resolutions, maybe it’s time to think about joining up. You’ll be doing yourself, and your community, a big favor.
It might even make a good Christmas present for someone who will use the services and programs provided.
