John Leslie “Les” Waldroff, age 85, of Burkhardt, died on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond.
He was born the son of John and Emma Waldroff on Sept. 10, 1923 in Stillwater, Minn. Les farmed Waldroff Farms throughout St. Croix County until he was 55. During this time was involved on the county board and was the Town of St. Joseph chairman. Upon his retirement from farming, he bought The Willow River Inn. Les would be its owner for 18 years and would also become the president of the Tavern League. After selling the tavern, Les pursued his passion for collecting and restoring antique tractors. He also enjoyed time hunting in Sawyer County in northern Wisconsin. Les was an outgoing people-person, he helped anyone when they needed it, and he was a wonderful grandpa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; granddaughter, Tammy; and sister, Lucille Doerr. Les is survived by his son, David (Julie) Waldroff of Hudson; five grandchildren, Jon, Kendra, Jim, Kerri and Kim; four great-grandchildren, Bryan, Samantha, Wyatt and Madison; brother, Lloyd Waldroff of Hudson; extended family and friends. A funeral service for Les was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 920 Third St., Hudson. Burial followed in the Houlton Cemetery. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at church and Sunday, Jan. 18 from 5 until 8 p.m. at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, 715-386-3725. www.oconnellfunera lhomes.com
