The death of a 5-week-old boy in Stevens Point is being investigated as a homicide.

According to police, the boy’s 23-year-old father claimed he was tossing the baby in the air when the child accidentally fell on the floor and hit his head.

But police Sgt. Greg Bean said the injuries discovered in the autopsy didn’t match the father’s story.

Portage County Coroner Scott Rifleman said the infant had heavy bleeding between his brain and skill due to significant head trauma.

The boy was first taken to a Stevens Point hospital on Jan. 24, and was later transferred to a Marshfield hospital where he taken off life support and died five days later.

The father was jailed for a violating a previous probation.

Prosecutors say they’re waiting for more medical reports before considering charges. The boy’s mother was working at the time of the incident.
