Old Gem presents World War II play

The Old Gem Theater presents “In Search of Anne Frank; Children of the Holocaust” on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m.

The Old Gem Theater presents “In Search of Anne Frank; Children of the Holocaust” on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m.

This original Old Gem production examines the stories of children who were affected by the atrocities of the Nazis during World War II.

Thirteen-year-old Alison is assigned to do a paper on the Holocaust but she’d rather be texting her friends and surfing the Internet. “It’s ancient history. What’s it got to do with me?” she complains to her mother.

However she changes her mind when Alison discovers the writings and artwork of children who died in concentration camps, children just like her.

“In Search of Anne Frank; Children of the Holocaust” is a powerful look at brave victims of the Holocaust including Anne Frank, author of “Diary of a Young Girl,” Luba Tysynska, who saved 52 children at Bergen-Belsen and Irena Synkova, a teacher at the Jewish ghetto Terezin.

The play features Old Gem Young Performers Ensemble members: Amanda Richter, Misty Price and Abreana Koller, all of New Richmond. Old Gem Professional Company members, Virginia Haggart, of Loretto, Minn., and Tom Monn, of Woodbury, Minn., are also featured.

“In Search of Anne Frank; Children of the Holocaust” will be performed on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for children.

Weekday matinees for groups are available through March 20.
